01

Mission

Many US master's programmes offer some funding to strong applicants. It comes from the university or department rather than from a single national scholarship, so each programme sets its own terms. Applications are managed through each university's graduate school.

02

What you get

The funding varies: merit-based awards, tuition that is reduced or waived, and graduate assistantships. Funding is limited, and the amount and type depend on the programme.

03

Who can apply

You need a GPA of at least 3.0 and an English score of TOEFL 80 or IELTS 6.5 or higher, though the requirement varies by programme. The GRE is optional. You also need 3 letters of recommendation. No separate application for funding is required.

04

What they look for

Because funding is merit- or research-based, programmes favour applicants with strong academic and research records.

05

The fine print

Funding is limited and highly selective. Decision is made at the time of admission. Most admitted applicants receive no financial aid; however, acquiring assistantship after starting the program is possible and more common.
